Director of Finance (Fully Remote) – Law Firm

Our client, a highly respected national law firm, is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to join their leadership team in a fully remote capacity. This is an outstanding opportunity for a strategic and hands-on finance leader with a strong background in law firm accounting, financial operations, and team management.

The Director of Finance will oversee the firm’s day-to-day accounting operations while serving as the primary subject matter expert for financial systems, accounting workflows, and process improvements. This individual will partner with firm leadership to ensure operational excellence, maintain strong internal controls, and develop scalable financial processes that support the firm’s continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, including:
    • General Ledger
    • Accounts Payable
    • Payroll
    • Expense Reimbursements
    • Trust Accounting
    • Cash Applications
    • Bank and Account Reconciliations
  • Manage and oversee the monthly financial close process, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Oversee the firm’s accounts payable function, vendor payments, employee expense reimbursements, and corporate credit card program.
  • Review payroll prior to processing and ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Manage client trust accounting across multiple jurisdictions while ensuring compliance with applicable state bar rules and trust accounting regulations.
  • Serve as the firm’s administrator for online banking platforms and oversee treasury management activities.
  • Coordinate the opening and maintenance of operating and trust bank accounts.
  • Manage annual business registrations, licensing renewals, and corporate filings.
  • Evaluate existing accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and technology.
  • Lead financial systems enhancements and process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and documentation.
  • Serve as the firm’s primary resource for accounting systems, financial data, and accounting workflow questions.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
  • Establish performance expectations and promote accountability.
  • Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Partner with firm leadership to improve operational effectiveness and support strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience leading accounting or finance teams.
  • Current or recent law firm accounting experience is required.
  • Experience with Aderant or a comparable legal accounting system is required.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting operations.
  • Extensive experience managing month-end close and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced professional services environment.
