The Compliance and Risk (C&R) Team, led by the firm’s General Counsel based in London, is seeking a Compliance Analyst to join our New Haven office. This role will provide expertise in anti-money laundering (AML), sanctions and client onboarding. It is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new team, helping shape our new processes.

The C&R Team advises the firm on all aspects of its legal and regulatory duties, including financial crime compliance, risk management, client engagement terms, complaints and claims, internal investigations, insurance, governance, external vendor contracts and data privacy.

The position reports to a New Business Intake Manager based in the UK and works closely with the UK-based C&R Team.

Roles and Responsibilities

New Business Intake

  • Carrying out client due diligence (CDD) on a full range of clients including individuals, companies and trusts analyzing CDD material provided by clients and advising whether further information is needed to complete the CDD process;
  • Carrying out risk assessments at client inception and also when CDD records are updated to see whether the client presents a higher than usual risk of money laundering/reputational risk;
  • Using a wide range of databases such as World Check, Company Registry information, Orbis and Experian to obtain CDD information;
  • Carrying out research to establish whether there is any adverse press about a prospective client and assessing its relevance;
  • Carrying out searches to identify whether a client is a politically exposed person (PEP) and preparing related escalations, as well as ongoing monitoring;
  • Carrying out searches against the international sanctions list (sanctions screening) in respect of matter parties and payments;
  • Answering queries from clients, partners, fee earners and other support staff about compliance requirements

Ad Hoc

  • Where appropriate, carrying out and providing advice on conflicts of interest searches using data submitted by partners;
  • Assisting with certain administrative tasks such as keeping the team’s filing up to date, archiving and data entry;
  • Assisting with file audits;
  • Comply with all relevant legal and regulatory obligations including the New York State Unified Court System and Connecticut Judicial Branch.

Skills and Experience

  • A minimum of 1 year’s experience, ideally within a law firm;
  • Previous experience with Elite, Intapp or other AML databases would be an advantage;
  • A particular interest in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing work;
  • Good IT skills including proficient use of Excel, Word and Outlook.
