A leading regional law firm of approximately 300 attorneys that operates from a strategic platform of offices located in Albany, Boston, Buffalo, New Haven, New York City, Rochester, Syracuse, Washington DC, and Toronto, is seeking one or more lawyers, including an associate, senior associate, partner or a team of lawyers to join its Trusts & Estates Practice Area in the Rochester office to assume responsibility for and succeed to a senior Trusts & Estates partner’s practice. The senior partner’s practice serves high-net-worth clients and business clients and involves estate, gift, and GST tax planning; business succession planning; and general estate and trust planning. The firm’s Trusts & Estates Practice Area has deep experience in tax and corporate matters, including drafting shareholder and operating agreements that support plans. The team also has access to extensive additional tax and corporate capabilities in other firm practice areas.
In addition to serving as a significant contributor to the succession of a senior partner’s practice, the attorney will train and collaborate as a member of a rapidly growing trusts and estates practice, providing advice and counsel on general estate and trust planning, tax planning, asset protection, and business succession planning strategies and techniques; performing transactional work, including drafting wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, and operating, shareholder, and other owner agreements; forming and structuring business entities; quantifying tax impacts of estate and business succession plans and preparing flow charts of plan structures; working on estate and trust administration matters, including structuring and project managing the administration plan and supervising the preparation of accountings and estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax returns; and addressing procedural and disputed matters. The attorney will also be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with clients, referral sources, and other attorneys within the firm.
Strong verbal and written communication, analytical, quantitative, matter management, and executive functioning skills are required. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in trusts and estates practice. A license to practice in Florida, an LLM in tax, and experience in corporate and transactional work will be highly regarded.
